Pros

Very inclusive environment and friendly staff

Cons

Management team is very disconnected from the staff. REI as a company dips their toes into many different brands and invest into various brands that eventually they aren't able to sell which then go to sales racks. REI hasn't been a profitable company for the last 2 years due to their poor decision making at the corporate level. This led the company to hiring a executive from companies that had to lay off many people in the retail world for example. Bed Bath and Beyond and Target. Which then they let go of many of the REI Leads which had a lot of knowledge in the outdoors. They did this in order to make up money for the mistake they made at the corporate level for investing in product that was not needed that sat in warehouses for quite a while.

Pros

The people. Still a good contingent of coworkers who believe in the mission and have a genuine love of the outdoors and are passionate about getting people outside and sharing that experience with others.

Cons

For decades, REI was an authentic, employee-focused company. It had been on the Forbes 100 best places to work list for 21 years straight. Since coming out of the pandemic, REI has begun to replace (or outright force out in many cases) much of the old leadership guard with leaders from other retailers, such as Amazon, Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, etc.. Seemingly overnight the culture shifted from one of implicit trust, ownership over your work and decision making, and a relentless focus on the people experience to one of micromanagement, no decision making ability in your own work, and a general air of hostility and mistrust towards anyone who had been at REI for more than a couple of years. It became a situation where your very experience and tenure were viewed as a threat to new leadership. Additionally, leaders with a large degree of experience, knowledge and authenticity in the outdoor community were consistently replaced with leaders with retail experience at other retailers, but little knowledge, experience or authenticity with or in the outdoor community and the members they serve. Additionally, they are 100% aggressively targeting union activity with extremely dubious and questionable tactics from an ethics and values standpoint. Many of the co-op's members would be very disappointed in the company's posture and activities in this space if they had more line of sight to way they are choosing to prosecute their agenda.

Pros

None anymore. The discount isn't worth the way they treat employees. You can get an outdoor gear discount elsewhere without putting yourself through the pain of only being valued if you sell memberships and credit cards. REI used to be a great place to work...but no more.

Cons

They have moved to a culture where tenured knowledgeable employees are being laid off to save money. If you have an opinion that isn't part of the "plan", you are terminated. If you don't sell enough memberships and credit cards, you will be terminated. Retail store employees and managers are taking the blame for the failures of senior leadership, and senior leaders continue to be over-compensated despite failures. In contrast, store employees are barely able to survive. It's gone from a great organization to one that is being completely mismanaged at the highest levels.
