Bad management and stressful life

Pros

You do get chance to learn new things in first few months of your tenure at REI

Cons

PMs do not care, how much ever you work, they always expect employee to work for more than 10 hrs a day. Life here sucks... you cannot spend a single evening with your family, you get calls when on vacation or offline from communicator.. there are lot of senior people, who are in the company for 8+ years, they think employees are slaves.. keep putting pressure on employees, and keep them ALWAYS under stress.. Lot of blame games and politics, few people have developed out of office relationships with the seniors, they do not work at all and keep bitching about peers / fellow employees to the PMs / resource managers. Generally people are hied for associate position and the company tries to keep them on low salary as many days as possible. Timesheets are also a pain here, as full time employees have to justify every minute of their work like contractors. In order to get full salary at the end of the pay period, every employee has to justify each and every minute of their work hrs spent. After all this hard work also, do not expect recognition unless you have out of office friendship with managers. Do not expect bonus, if you get an award in the same year. According to REI management Performance excellence monetary award / referral money / Yearly bonus are all the some, all the employees get only one of the above in an year.

Pros

Some really nice hardworking people (who deserve better) Supportive of education and training that provides better skills for employees

Cons

The most unprofessional management team I have ever experienced, starting from the executive management on down. They hire a lot of HIB visa holders, and have no respect for a decent work-life balance, but cover this up with a lot of phony "corporate culture" speak that glorifies a work environment where bad management is ignored, or worse, rewarded, if you are able to get your staff to keep working harder and harder not smarter. Managers are promoted from within without a lot of support or mentoring because the senior staff are completely overleveraged or lack relevant experience themselves so they can't help. The end result is a lot of overtime and stress for the poor staff trying to do the work. The company says that its competitors are big tier 1 companies, which indicates how out of touch and arrogant the executive management is if they think they measure up to these companies. This company is on a downward spiral with no management vision or employee policies to shore it up. If you are absolutely desperate for a job, then take one with them, but keep looking - you'll be glad you did.
