Very Bureaucratic and Siloed Organization

Pros

Good production support (graphic artists, admin assistants) allows researchers to spend more time focusing on research rather than time-consuming administrative tasks. Good place to find your research niche since you are exposed to many different research topics and clients and work on multiple projects simultaneously.

Cons

Poor management -- being intelligent does not equate to being a good manager. A lot of pressure for mid- and upper-level staff to write proposals, win work, and minimize their time spent on overhead. However, who gets to work on which proposals is a very political process. Ineffective leaders are not removed. Employees who commit research fraud or who are verbally abusive to more junior staff are not penalized. Catty burnout environment, CEO seems like a dud -- not sure he has any real substantive qualifications to effectively lead a research organization -- doesn't seem like a good fit. There is no real corporate culture because some departments are very stringent about clocking in and out, whereas others allow you to work from home. As a result, morale is very low in many areas of the company.

Pros

Seems great at first. They offer a lot of "training" but it is all a one size fits all mentality. They aren't really open to exceptions to anything...just one way or the highway approach. You will end up screwed over if you disagree with them on anything or voice true concerns.

Cons

Full of it. Different situations based on where you are in the country, but all bs. They do what they want to do. It can be 1 minute into the new quarter, and they are all about telling you how you are behind. I watched a higher up yell and belittle an employee for taking 2 apples instead of 1 during training. Who does that? If they want you gone, you will be gone one way or another to bring in someone that works more or fits better in the geographical location they want. Turnover rate is high, and that is for a reason. I felt betrayed by this company. I gave them a lot of me for 3 years only to be screwed over when they wanted more from me than what I could give.

Pros

Good work life balance, benefits, telework options. There are some wonderful, bright people there. IF you're lucky enough to end up on the right project you can have autonomy and truly grow and learn alot.

Cons

Pay is far less than it could be. If you end up on the wrong project you can be micromanaged and/or doing work far below your skillset and abilities causing lack of interest, boredom, and a stall in your skills/career. Far too much pressure to bill to client. If you don't have enough work to fill your time you can end up knocking on doors or sending "cold call" emails essentially begging for work or you'll end up using your PTO to cover your time, or worse having to drop down to part-time status until you can find more project work. And when you do find something to do, it's basically the work no one else wanted and 99% of the time tedious and again below your skills and abilities. They continue to hire BS level statisticians to be competitive in price to win contracts leaving MS level statisticians scrambling to find work because they're now considered too expensive. So you end up getting your 2-2.5% increase, which if you stay long enough will get your salary to a comfortable place but then you'll be performing at a below BS level, zapping your confidence and hindering your chances at a promotion or job change. I've come across way too many MS level statisticians with 10-15 years of service at RTI who still don't feel like confident statisticians and feel stuck.
