Pros

RTI is involved in wide range of research projects. Good opportunities for training, reasonable work-life balance, has excellent research facilities.

Cons

Mostly government grant dependent. Not so great perks or career growth opportunities. RTI spends most of the profits on infrastructure but not much on people pays. Has a diverse set of departments and hence, office culture and growth opportunities vary significantly from one department to another.

Good work, stressful environment.

Pros

The company mission is good if it fits your values. The salary and benefits are good.

Cons

The CRO environment can be very, very stressful. There's constant pressure to bring in work, and awkward competition among colleagues to work on proposals or projects of interest. You're working together, but at the same time, you're competing against each other. I feel pressured to bring work home almost every night.

Pros

I really enjoyed my time working at RTI. I was hired right after earning my bachelor's degree in Chemistry and it was a fantastic experience. I didn't have a lot of experience directly coming out of college, and they really took the time to train me and teach me new techniques. I got along very well with my coworkers and I am still in touch with a couple of them even today. One of my previous bosses even wrote a recommendation for me for a training grant I was applying for during graduate school. PTO (which includes sick time) is earned at a rate per month equivalent to 4 weeks/year and benefits started Day 1.

Cons

As a bachelor degree scientist, the opportunity to move to management was minimal (though that is understandable). The starting pay was lower than expected, though it is a non-profit.
