Pros

-There is some flexibility in the work schedule and the opportunity to travel. -There are many smart and capable people to collaborate and learn from, though like any workplace there are a few duds here and there. -If your goal is to return to higher education for a graduate degree, this is an excellent stepping stone to get there. If you already have a graduate degree and desire to continue a career in research (in academia or otherwise), this is good for that as well.

Cons

-It is very hierarchical. If you only have a bachelor's degree you will be delegated the least interesting, most time-consuming work, and some people will of course take advantage of the fact that you are "the bottom of the totem pole". Many with just a bachelor's leave within a few years to pursue graduate degrees or a job with better pay/work. -In the research positions, your work is based on contracted projects and your time is charged accordingly (so like a lawyer charging for hours worked). This means that if there are not enough projects or the project is on hold, finding work can be difficult. In theory, a manager would help you navigate this situation but I witnessed that this was not always the case. -The salary is not competitive and the structure for promotions and raises is not great.

Benefits, flexible work environment, type of work is interesting

Cons

Runs more like a corporation now than a not-for-profit; management does not have a business strategy for future work

Pros

RTI has really great work/life balance and the benefits are pretty good. I get to work on a lot of different projects.

Cons

If you are in one of the regional offices and not on the RTP campus, it can feel like you are an after thought. There are a lot more activities and opportunities to network and grow. There is also a lack of collaboration across divisions and centers.
