Pros

Working at a place were you are able to work on some of the latest technologies is definitively a bonus. I like the fact that employees have a say in the interview process before a new hire comes in. In most cases the team will interview a person before they join, even if its a department transfer. The teams are very close nit. I felt real ownership of the projects I worked on. I was able to make my own schedule for work. We were able to work from home. Free Beer! Free Food! Need I say more?

Cons

Management does what they want, sometimes at the teams expense. Compensation is a bit low. Before giving a salary number, keep in mind that 15% of your agreed to salary will come from an E.stimated V.alue A.dded "Bonus". And that bonus is NOT guaranteed. The team I was on lost 2 bonuses, and that hurt. If I were to do it all over again, I would have asked for 15% more of my salary, so that the "bonus" was actually a bonus. Its a pain point for alot of rackers.

Pros

Rackspace has provided an incredible number of opportunities for many of its employees. Those who work hard and achieve results have been able to advance and in many cases, pave their own way. After going public, the company is well-capitalized to grow and succeed through tough economic times and management has a history of managing finances efficiently and responsibly. This is a high-growth company in a high-growth industry with many opportunities across their lines of business (managed hosting, cloud hosting at Mosso and email hosting at Mailtrust).

Cons

As the company has grown from a fledgling start-up to a real enterprise, the commitment level of new employees has decreased. It takes a certain amount of bravery to join a company that may not survive, and in the early days, a much higher percentage was ready to put in whatever it took to thrive and win. Now there are many more coasters and people who are just trying to tag along with what now seems to be a "sure thing." With the growth has also come a sense of territorial boundaries between some groups.

Pros

Rackspace is not a "geekploitation" company--they are passionate about their employees (Rackers). Great, optimistic coworkers who honestly treat you like friends and family. If you are headed to the San Antonio or Austin office, living in central Texas can be cheap compared to living on the east or west coast. Rackspace is a super casual environment and feels much less corporate than you'd expect at its current size.

Cons

Work can be extremely demanding and timelines can be tight. It's better to be on the system administration side than in product development. The pay, while fair, is not nearly as competitive as it could be. Now that Rackspace is public, there will be more scrutiny and oversight.
