Pros

Provides a challenging work environment; i.e., proving yourself by delivering results can lead to other opportunites within Rain Bird and other companies. People who leave Rain Bird do well in the irrigation industry and elsewhere. Rain Bird is the leader in its industry and manufactures products that can benefit the planet. Rain Bird hires a lot of top notch talent. Salaries seem to be competitive.

Cons

Periodic downsizing cycles. Securing the resources to accomplish results can be a challenge. Different divisions of the company at times seem to work at odds against each other. Amenities can be lean - most, but not all, mid-level employees have offices

Pros

Rain Bird SHOULD BE the ideal place to work - limited competition and a slow moving industry starved for innovation and forward thinking. However the incompetence and the inefficiencies are enough to drive you crazy! The pay is quite good and the story that is spun is very intriguing. Don't fall for the trap. The pay, the theory of your position and the chance to move up the organization are the Siren's song. It seems ideal, but it is not - the Siren's song will ruin your life. The only good news is that you are not alone. Several, very strong employees, have taken the bait.

Cons

The Product Manager position is "sold" as the General Manager for your product line, but unfortunately you have very little control. Your (tactical) strategic plan is handed to you and it focuses on 12 months vs. 3 - 5 years. They want you to have an MBA, but don't expect use any of your training or tools. The owner, Tony, is clearly intimidated by your attempt to "trick him" by attempting to craft your strategy using widely accepted marketing terminology and practices. Your ability to control you own destiny is limited. You are clearly hired as the person to blame when things go wrong. Don't expect to get the credit for successes - the Directors will take that, but rest assured, you will be front and center when they ask what YOU are doing to address issues that you had limited input or control of. If you enjoy being treated like you are in Elementary school, you will be OK, but if you have a great pedigree, don't fall for the trap. Rain Bird - "hire the best and fire the best." The Directors are guilty of perpetuating this environment.

Pros

Pretty good salary, good employees, good benefits

Cons

Many people come and go frequently, not many long term career opportunities. Most of the manufacturing, customer service, engineering and accounting departments are moving to Mexico or even China or India.
