Pros

-Interesting and brilliant coworkers -The NYC headquarters location (Lower Manhattan has basically every subway train) -Work-from-home options -Important and noble mission

Cons

-Budget cuts have caused another wave of layoffs -Low morale because of the above-mentioned cuts -Good people have quit due to a lack of job security and/or a lack of career progression -Far too many unnecessary meetings that eat into productivity

Pros

Great benefits and time off Laid back atmosphere

Cons

This organization is great if you are a recent college graduate, or you are looking for your first job however, senior management is very poor, aloof and disconnected. Extremely difficult to gain ownership over your work. There was no CFO hired for over a year. Poor judgement in hiring for senior level positions. Very little value placed on the Assistant and Coordinator level positions.

Pros

I liked the mission of the organization and the international nature of the work. I also liked many of the people with whom I worked and the informal culture.

Cons

I was very disheartened to discover how little difference what the organization does really makes. Allowing companies to place the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal on their products when only 30 percent of what the consumer is buying comes from certified sources is only one example. The organization in my opinion is addressing the symptoms of environmental degradation more than its causes. There was almost no accountability, so work often took much longer than it should have and wasn't done especially well. Lack of cooperation among coworkers and support from upper management was frequently a problem. Many decisions were made for political reasons by managers who didn't really know what they were doing in the first place. A lot of time and money was wasted as a result. Many of the people hired just weren't qualified. I think the low salaries were the primary reason for that. They also were one of the main reasons for the high turnover rate. Frustration was another. We were told by Human Resources that we were being compensated fairly a number of times when everyone knew that wasn't true. That caused resentment and contributed to making the general mood a somewhat bitter one. I could go on.
