If you’ve come here asking if Redfin is a good place to work, Do your diligence by looking into reviews by Job title/department, not just the overall score. Note Associate Agents are NOT employees and set their own flexible schedule. You'd likely be most satisfied as a partner agent, corporate or supporting role.
The company has went downhill since going public. It’s your typical corporation to line pockets, just not yours. I once believed in the mission but it in my experience it felt Profit over People and Quantity over Quality! If they really cared about their agents, they would dial back growth and streamline continuous issues and ensure workloads provide for a work-life balance while excelling at customer service.
Turnover is constant and many high producing agents have left, managers stepping down, and employees overworked to the extreme. Service has suffered as a result.
No change management program. The company is very disorganized (siloed departments) and constantly changing directions and often confused. Information comes down the pipeline but rarely up.
I was terminated/laid off the same day as the CEO announced the furloughs/layoffs. I personally feel C-19 (the pandemic) was used as an excuse. They furloughed the majority of their agents however as a Sr. Agent, I was let go and I was told that it was tenure with no further elaboration. I had 2+ years with the company, a promotion, 55+ sales , and a flawless 5.0 star rating; yet I discovered that they kept new agents on board with no experience. Loyalty apparently meant nothing.
All my deals were transferred including those that were a 1-2 weeks from closing. They didn't pay these out and instead I received typical severance. So why couldn't they have waited for my deals to close or provide notice prior to being laid off? Considering bonuses are a majority of an agent's pay... this was a repulsive move. They preach to "Do the Right Thing" for their customers... but not their employees?
Overall management is inexperienced with high levels of micromanagement. Preferential treatment and nepotism also run ramped.
My manager was gossiping about others during 1:1’s. We had mutual clients we served, many who complained about them and the service received. This shouldn't even be allowed as it puts an employee in an uncomfortable position.
Absolutely NO Work/Life balance - The constant stress is not worth risking your health or mental well being.
Wanna take vacation? Find someone who isn't busy enough with their own deals. Covering for someone? Your workload can nearly triple.
At the end of the day, if you calculate your hours vs pay and time away from family....it just doesn't add up.
As for the position as an agent, it's become a fear-based culture with metrics on top of metrics (Some completely out of your control). My manager "threatened" with a performance improvement plan even though I had used several weeks of vacation in a single quarter, yet the expectation was still to meet "the numbers". I was told “Maybe Redfin isn’t a good fit for you”.
Lack of Diversity - I feel this is a significant problem, especially in today's climate. The territories I covered and teams I worked with were unproportionate in terms of diversity.
After months of being laid off, one of my clients had asked if I was back. They were told Redfin said they were fighting to bring me back. Someone had misinformed my former client or wasn't telling the truth. They were incredibly upset when I told them I was laid off.
All in all, my experience was a complete slap to the face. I find it interesting that many positions opened up in a short period of time after the furloughs/layoffs.
