They do not staff to acuity. The acuity at RMC is high. Across all levels of care. I regularly hear traveler RNs talk about how shocking it is that a patient isn’t assigned a higher level of care. The progressive care unit takes ventilators at a 3:1 ratio. You can have a patient on an insulin drip and 3 other patients (4 on a bad day) and no PCT and your charge is in staffing with a full team of patients. The emergency department staffing is atrocious. The case management team is also task saturated and spread thin trying to cover entire floors/ multiple units per one CM. You’re taking care of higher acuity, patients, often with complex psychosocial needs, and you as the healthcare worker are given less resources, less staff support, lower wages and incentives, etc than our counterparts.

You don’t have any RT driven protocols, pulmonary and trauma doctors do not communicate with you. You are there to bring the equipment to the room and get the ABG they need. Nothing more. No advancement opportunities, and lack of career growth.
