Pros

Rice is a great place to do research. It is a small campus, friendly staff and administration help to make life as a graduate student a little bit easier. The students are friendly and laid back, so the atmosphere is not as competitive as other schools.

Cons

The worst part about Rice is the parking situation. There is no good parking option near most buildings unless you want to spend $500+ a year. That is not doable for a lot of graduate students. Parking in the neighborhoods is maddening since the rich homeowners do not like students parking near their houses and complain to the city.... guess what... you bought a house near a university, and the streets in front of your house are not private property.

Pros

The people you end up working with and the mentorship involved in doing research is entirely independent of the university. The culture of the department is generally pretty collaborative, but as a researcher or assistant, how far you branch outside of the lab is entirely up to you. Find an involved PI to work for, and you will have a highly enriched and rewarding experience.

Cons

Since each lab acts basically like its own separate entity, there's a lot you can learn about some and nothing you can learn about others before joining. I would say really take the time to not only visit the lab before working there, but also talk to the students about their experiences there if you can.
