Pros

Rice has a great atmosphere for graduate students, and a lot of emphasis is put on student success rather than "weeding out". There are a lot of things to get involved in, and a lot of support for students here.

Cons

Rice is an excellent research school (I'm in the natural sciences) and so you're going to spend a lot of time on research. That should be true anywhere, but you have to stay on top of things to stay competitive at Rice.

Pros

Liberal Vacation Time and a Beautiful campus. You are also doing work that matters. Contributing to the betterment of the world.

Cons

If you aren't faculty, you are a second class citizen. Under-performers never get moved along, so if you are a hard charger and ambitious, it can be very frustrating. Senior leadership in-fighting leads to many roadblocks for middle management to actually accomplish anything for the greater good of the university.
