Beautiful campus, professional development opportunities galore, smart students, strong benefits and compensation package, generous vacation time. The University offers flexibility and creative opportunities rarely found in private industry and for the right personality, it is a place to blossom as a leader.

Cons

Challenging, can be demanding hours and frustrating bureaucratic processes, some departments honor work/life balance better than others. Rice is what you make of it; if you aren't happy in the department you begin with, you can easily find a better fit on campus elsewhere but you have to make the effort. If you want cookie cutter rules and clearly defined processes, Rice will be maddening to you.

An interesting environment for scientific work

Access to world class expertise, exciting research and exciting challenges. There are several research groups working in the very front of the corresponding fields.

Cons

Two low salaries for researchers, very little possibilities for internal promotion. Research scientist remain in temporary positions for a long time without any further improvement of their situations. As a result many young researcher come but also go soon to some other places. Senior researchers can be trapped in a no-way for their promotions.
