Pros

Opportunities for Growth - When I started at RigUp we had roughly 100 employees, and by the time I was laid off we had gotten up to roughly 500 employees - the opportunity for growth was tremendous. Many people in my org were able to grow or change roles to further their personal career goals. Great Perks - breakfast provided, lunch stipend, gym access, unlimited PTO and sick time, and parental leave - though some of these perks may be limited post-layoffs and COVID-19 to try to stop the bleeding, but hopefully not! Amazing People - There are some truly amazing people working at RigUp.

Cons

Opportunities for Growth - RigUp has a knack for getting rid of the most innovative and passionate people because they aren't yes-men. While they hired some terrific leaders, they never lasted long if they disagreed with the COO. If you had one of the few great managers, you absolutely had opportunity for growth. If you were lucky to have a good manager, you had great growth opportunities. Once you got stuck with a bad manager (which there were plenty of), you were done for. People - They also have a knack for hiring or promoting managers who have absolutely no experience or skill. While it's common for startups to promote people to roles they've never been in before and hire young/inexperienced managers, RigUp desperately needed to train and guide their managers. There were no real trainings or requirements for managers until March of 2020, and even those were half-baked and more of an idea than actual practice. Culture/Values - They have some great values in place, but don't actually live by them. The only thing they ever focused on was "Exceeding Expectations" which is a terrible way to motivate people. If your goal is to exceed your goals, people constantly feel like they're behind even when they're meeting their goals. They touted a good work/life balance, which they had when I started, but in the end the execs would just walk around the offices at 6pm and praise the people there and shame the people who weren't there still. If you weren't in the office working 8am - 7pm as well as answering Slacks and calls at all hours and on weekends, you weren't doing enough. Transparency & Focus - It was constantly unclear of what our main priorities were, and what teams were working on. We switched focus about a dozen times in the year and a half that I was there. They are selling a product that has barely changed at all and has massive gaps and flaws, and didn't seem like it was changing anytime soon as they pulled nearly all product resources. All in all, RigUp is a glorified consulting firm that just wants to hire yes-men. I'm optimistic that once the economy is in a better place they will learn from their mistakes and pick themselves back up.

Thank you for your review. We sincerely appreciate the time you took to provide thoughtful feedback about your experience working at RigUp, and are glad you felt you had the opportunity to work with some amazing people. Understanding the importance of transparency we have implemented weekly Townhalls, more communication from Leadership, and firmwide updates from departments and teams, but know we can still strive to be better. If you have any additional specific feedback, please email the People Team directly at WeHearYou@rigup.com. Thank you again for sharing your insights.

Brilliant People - Terrible Leadership

Pros

Downtown location, great pay, great benefits,

Cons

I came to RigUp at a time when my team was being created. They hired a manager that was extremely ill equipped to manage people. One that repeatedly told us our jobs were safe and that they loved having us. This manager made us work around the clock and then reduced our roles to customer service roles. This manager repeatedly pitted us against each other and asked us to make each other look bad. The platform is being asked to do things way beyond its years and senior management puts inexperienced children in mid level management positions. One of the values that RigUp has is to be able to have the tough conversations. But when you try to have the tough conversations you are labeled as negative and disrespectful. My advice is to do the opposite of all the values and you'll probably have a career for life. I mean, if the company can make it past this year.

Growing Pains

Pros

There are incredibly smart people here -- from those who started the company up to the newest hires. For people who like a fast-pace and embrace change, RU can be exhilarating sometimes. We really are disrupting a huge, traditional part of the oil and gas business. The benefits are great and the work environment is nice. Snacks, gym. standing desks, etc. The company is also more and more diverse by the day which I think is awesome. There is crazy high potential for this company.

Cons

Ironically, given that RU is a change agent in oil and gas, the core group of employees who built RU to its initial success are very resistant to new employees and the ideas they bring, They've hired some great new people at the individual and leader level and they seem to know what they're doing, but this group of RU veterans seems more focused on running them off than learning from them. I don't know that it's a "bro" culture thing like the other review mentioned or if it's more about old vs. new employees, but it's worth noting that this core group of employees are a bunch of young white guys and the newer employees are far more diverse. Leadership seems confused about the culture they want. When you're hired (and this is still the case), they tout work/life balance, being able to work remotely, etc, but the actual reality is that they expect you to work long, hard hours to get things done before you go play. They should be honest about that so people can make an informed choice about RU. Shaming people because they aren't in the office when you encouraged them not to be isn't right. They haven't fully invested in their employees. There is a tendency to throw people at a project or problem without sufficient training, expertise, or preparation. When the project fails or the problem isn't solved, either the employees are blamed or the manager is blamed, but the truth is the lack of the 3 things above set the employee and the manager up to fail and our leaders are responsible for that. Some of the changes seem to be changes because the leadership team can't make up their minds more than because the changes make anything better. I've been here almost a year and that's been long enough to see several re-orgs. I can't say that any of them did much, if anything, to improve performance. I want to make a career here and get promoted, but these issues make me worry that I am not a good fit and wouldn't be set up for success.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review - we truly appreciate it. This insight is critical for us as we develop as an organization. It's of utmost importance to us that we're transparent across the entire company from our customers to our employees and that we're constantly pushing forward, not looking back. If you're comfortable doing so, I'd highly recommend sharing this feedback to the People/Talent team! Thank you!
