Pros

Lots of institutional money, great daycare/school for families, good health benefits, beautiful campus, top notch research, lots of flexibility and freedom in terms of the direction you take your work

Cons

Gender inequity, no diversity, something of a company town, where University controls all aspects of your life (housing, healthcare, children’s school), mafia like in their management of professional conflict, pressure and pay people to keep quiet, no ombudsman/third party arbitration.

Pros

I worked at Rockefeller University Press (part of the university but pretty independent of it). I feel so lucky to have been a part of the press: the work was steady and challenging, the benefits are amazing (one of the best benefits packages anywhere), and my coworkers and the general atmosphere are very supportive and laid back. I feel like I learned a lot while I was here, and that my contributions were valued.

Cons

PhD-level scientific subject material can be challenging until you get used to it. Because it's a small press, there are limited opportunities for advancement, but you'll feel very secure in whatever position you have.

Pros

Environment, lots of resources, campus, health care, scientific animation

Cons

because they can choose their labs and are paid by the university, ambitious grad students can be very pretentious and impose an awkward atmosphere on the labs.
