Pros

- Interesting Projects - Nice people - Newsletter is informative - CEO is great

Cons

- Don't feel appreciated, no reward for loyalty (you get a 3,5, and 10 year coin) and feel dispensable. - Benefits, pay increases, and rewards for "High performers", however when everybody already works so hard at RL (Rocket before people), the rewards are then down to whoever the manager likes the most. - Feel like I'm unable to speak out as I'll appear as damaged goods to the management and team and then lose opportunities and development.

Rocket Lab Response

Hi there, It's awesome to hear that you enjoy the people and projects at Rocket Lab, we are certainly doing extraordinary things with incredibly talented people. In the last 2 years we have increased the percentage of employees who have been awarded shares by over 200% and have made it easier to access shares with our employee stock purchase program. As we move into becoming a large business (we are well over 1000 employees now, with a huge amount of room to grow), we need to streamline our processes and structures, which is necessary to gain efficiencies. Whilst we know some are use to the small company Rocket Lab once was, we still believe in the same key principles and values we have always pursued, which helps us retain the gritty uniqueness that separates us from our competitors. We have recently completed our 2021 culture survey and we have a number of ideas that we think will be very impactful on the topics you have raised. We look forward to sharing these with you soon. Thanks again for taking the time to give us feedback. -Rocket Lab People and Culture

Pros

Very unique place to work, lots of design freedom with development projects. Get to experience everything from design, test and manufacture. The people are great and everyone loves what they do. No one there won’t go above and beyond to get the job done. High exposure to all things rockets, short development timelines and very hands on. It’s a great place to work but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. I’d recommend the place but only if you knew what you were getting into.

Cons

Very large disparity between US based and NZ based engineers, I’m talking over double what the NZ engineers are getting paid for the same position. Technicians get paid overtime but engineers don’t yet there’s a culture where everyone works 10+ hours a day to get the job done. High expectations make set backs all the more stressful and you are often given tasks you’re not qualified for to fill the resource gaps. The career grading matrix makes it seem like personal development is a priority but when performance reviews come round it’s mostly a box ticking session and if you don’t have all the points you don’t go up. They are also annual so join at the wrong time and you’re doing an extra year without the promotion. Overall the cons make it difficult to want to stay here long term unless you have been awarded heaps of stock to stick around.

Pros

Junior Engineers get to work with a broad range of technology. They use some great technology, which gives ample opportunities for platform learning.

Cons

Management are genuinely clueless about software development, failing upwards into leadership roles, then operating without any formal training. Outcomes are more important than their people at all times, but they also don't have a clear understanding what outcomes they're looking for, which means expectations aren't realistic. You can work 60+ hour weeks, release more code than entire teams, yet still get told your performance is lacking. Senior Engineers most likely have more understanding of the SDLC than Directors, but aren't allowed to question or improve processes, and will be managed by a mid-level intermediate who fits into the ego-driven boys-club. After 10 years, the codebases still look like a university group project, held together by toothpicks and red-bull. Tests? Standards? Governance? You won't find any of that here. They like to believe they move fast and are agile, yet are ignorant to how slow they move compared to other software companies. It's almost comical at times. "Rocket Lab can be a toxic and hostile place, and it's not for everyone" - said to me by my manager when I raised the ample sexism and racism in the workplace. I felt my time there was genuinely damaging to my career, not because of their (poor) industry reputation, but because they operate with such terrible practices that I started to forget what *good* software looked like.
