Pros

Good work/life balance Lots of opportunities to move around the company Interesting problems to solve

Cons

Has no clue how to manage software. Management says agile until they are blue in the face, but everyone knows it is really just waterfall. Company is run by mechanical/electrical engineers and salespeople but they are trying to transform the company into a modern software company. They can't afford to pay their software talent competitively, so they offshore all software development, then wonder why there are so many delays and cost overruns. Consistently returns cash to shareholders instead of employees. Employees get thrown under the bus while we increase the dividend. HR is from the stone age. They give you 1-2% raises every year and no amount of overachievement is rewarded with anything more than a pat on the back. They tell you that your salary is competitive but all you have to do is go on a job search and get offers 10-50% higher. Bleeding excellent talent at a breakneck speed. Health insurance is abysmal.

Pros

The organization is trying to increase diversity -- both of ethnicity and thought. If your first line leadership some leadership skills, your contribution & talent will be recognized. The organization has provided the structure and mechanisms for recognizing and rewarding employees who work hard and deliver successful outcomes.

Cons

Just because the structure is there, does not mean that leaders' employ it. It is a highly political, finger pointing, lack of accountability environment. Of course, you need to produce to be considered for promotional opportunities. Most professionals expect that. Unfortunately, that isn't enough. Time and again, employees watch the friends (and even family) of higher-ups be promoted without regard to prior results. This produces a culture of 'yes people' and suck ups. You need to know a higher up in the organization if you want to be considered for promotional opportunities..
