Pros

Good order book for future engine sales. Modern working practices such as agile working with laptops and smart phones rather than cubicles and desk phones. Great environment with the new offices in downtown Indianapolis with proximity to downtown restaurants.

Cons

It's a complicated global company with many decisions coming from HQ in the UK. Slow decision making from a number of interested parties. Unfortunately too many employees now so there needs to be a reduction in engineering workforce especially through middle 2016. The company has high operating costs and lower profit margin compared to the competition (GE & Pratt & Whitney). Company manages by tracking hours and applied workers more than actual project milestones and work accomplished. Forced overtime without pay for the engineers now.

Pros

excellent career opportunities. In the grand scheme of the world, Rolls-Royce is very well run, professional company. If you put in the effort you will be recognised and the senior management are prepared to take a risk on people with high potential. Great products & world class engineering make for a stimulating work environment. Salary to cost of living ratio in Derby is very attractive.

Cons

Its a very large organisation, so real change takes a long long time. This is something true of all large organisations, but can be frustrating none the less. The product lifecycle is also very long, so it takes a whole career to see a jet engine through from concept to end of life.

Pros

I love my coworkers - some truly smart and pleasant people to spend my workdays with. There's a lot of expertise in many disciplines. The Indy location has a reputation for figuring things out and getting things done, sometimes in spite of increasingly complex company procedures. The company has started a new "high performance culture" initiative that seems to be an honest attempt at setting a positive tone in the office. I think our new CEO, John Rishton, has great ideas for the company's direction, although he has an uphill battle to fight with the old guard.

Cons

The UK headquarters, Derby, still seems to think its ways are best for all company locations world-wide. They're wrong. Derby increases its micromanagement of the satellite facilities more each year, down to approving job openings for individual contributors. HR seems to be entirely old-school. We've had a forced distribution for appraisal scores for several years. GE, the pioneer of that idea, abandoned it a decade ago. For some reason HR thinks we can attract the best and brightest while paying industry average wages.
