Pros

The people are exceptionally intelligent. The work is very high-quality and high-profile. The attorneys generally try to maintain a positive, friendly atmosphere. Your time there will look great on your resume, and for good reason - the professional experience is great. Even if you only spend a few years at the firm, you will open many doors.

Cons

Like all law firms of this magnitude (PPP, revenues, number of attorneys, Vault rankings, whatever) it is a sweatshop. Associates are worked to the bone. If anyone tells you that this is a "lifestyle" or "family-friendly" firm, he or she is trying to sell you something. All BigLaw firms are like this - the product they sell is associates' time, and you will have to give an unbelievable amount of your time to the firm. Don't let anyone convince you that the work-life balance is materially different at Ropes than at any other mega firm.

Great benefits; no room for growth (staff review)

Pros

Lots of free food and events. Annual Dec firm party (they go ALL out), Cafe has a good selection, and is supplemented by company, so fairly affordable Good location, nice building, clean bathrooms

Cons

No room for growth (you have to ask for a raise or promotion and nag until someone does something) No transparency (my director promoted 2 new managers who started at the firm 8 mths prior. This is NOT best practices. You know a manager that new doesn't know anything right? Her specialist and assistant are still guiding her. The director doesn't care about anyone. She is always trying to look good to partners and senior management, but doesn't care about morale. If you don't care about your team, why do they have to work hard for you? Don't get promoted even when you work hard (told me I had to wait a few more months b/c I was one mth shy of 2 yrs, when these managers and specialists get promoted in under a year, and I went above and beyond when they needed me. Absolutely unfair, but that's how they do things.

Pros

Flexible hours, flexible work from home, flexible workloads (for some departments), some teams are great interpersonally. Free tea and coffee maybe?

Cons

Staff jobs are dead ends. It's not a place to grow a career but rather to stall it. Also that weird undrawn line between attorneys and staff is ... weird. And tiny 401(k) matches. Salary is also low per market. Stingy bonuses.
