Former EMT at Royal

Pros

- Flexible scheduling - Family-like atmosphere - Emergency and non-emergency transports - Opportunity for growth and advancement through FTO program - Call bonuses - Best BLS company in the area!

Cons

Not many downsides as far as BLS companies go. The company is a great building block for so many careers and as a result, there is a high turnover in EMTs (much like the other BLS companies).

Pros

It is a friendly environment for the most part. They attract a lot of good people so you will most likely get partnered with a cool person, and that is good when you are working a 10-12 hour shift.

Cons

Do not be fooled by the flashy set up they have, this is just another BLS company and I would highly recommend looking at other companies. I've seen one that has a 1500$ sign on bonus. They will work you till you have nothing left to give. They will praise you, but I promise, you are easily replaced in this industry. Last piece of advice I would pass onto you new EMTS, this is an awesome job with lots of personal reward and growth. You have to look out for yourself though as no one else will. Know the county protocol, it will tell you what you can and can not do. People talk a lot in this industry and WILL give you false information.

Dear Disappointed, Thank you for recognizing our organizational culture. A "friendly environment" and "a lot of good people" takes time, deliberate action, processes and more good people to build. This type of environment supports one key aspect of our mission, which is to develop healthcare leaders. We offer opportunity for advancement and assistance with career development which is why many people come to Royal and appreciate what we do. Most of our team members are focused on their careers in Fire, Nursing, PA/NP, Medical School and EMS careers. We never want someone to come to Royal because we reeled them with $1500. That would create a misalignment of purpose for us as an organization and for you as an individual. So please, if you are looking for $1500 (spread over thousands of hours) definitely, look at the other great BLS companies we have in the Bay Area. We only want people to join Royal who are Driven, Adaptable, Engaging, Empathetic… looking to build their careers, see their first EMT job as a building block on that journey and are goal and mission oriented. In terms of pay--you are correct, EMT's as a whole are underpaid. This is why we are members of the California Ambulance Association and participate in all the lobbying opportunities we can, to convince our law makers that the ambulance reimbursement rates need to be increased. Unfortunately we don't control 80% of our Revenue, meaning for Medi-Cal, Medicare and other payers we don’t set prices or choose our payer mix AND we spend most of our revenue on reinvesting back into the organization, our people and our culture. So please consider using your social networking skills and fight for justice to contact your elected official to change the Ambulance reimbursement rates. Best of luck to you in your career!!

Pros

Flexible, Encouraging environment, understanding management, positive place to learn from experienced people, good equipment, code 2 calls, unique learning opportunities not offered by other ambulance companies

Cons

For a BLS ambulance company there are not any cons that I can think of. In an industry that is transient, Royal is a great place to start.
