Dear Disappointed,
Thank you for recognizing our organizational culture. A "friendly environment" and "a lot of good people" takes time, deliberate action, processes and more good people to build. This type of environment supports one key aspect of our mission, which is to develop healthcare leaders.
We offer opportunity for advancement and assistance with career development which is why many people come to Royal and appreciate what we do. Most of our team members are focused on their careers in Fire, Nursing, PA/NP, Medical School and EMS careers. We never want someone to come to Royal because we reeled them with $1500. That would create a misalignment of purpose for us as an organization and for you as an individual.
So please, if you are looking for $1500 (spread over thousands of hours) definitely, look at the other great BLS companies we have in the Bay Area. We only want people to join Royal who are Driven, Adaptable, Engaging, Empathetic… looking to build their careers, see their first EMT job as a building block on that journey and are goal and mission oriented.
In terms of pay--you are correct, EMT's as a whole are underpaid. This is why we are members of the California Ambulance Association and participate in all the lobbying opportunities we can, to convince our law makers that the ambulance reimbursement rates need to be increased.
Unfortunately we don't control 80% of our Revenue, meaning for Medi-Cal, Medicare and other payers we don’t set prices or choose our payer mix AND we spend most of our revenue on reinvesting back into the organization, our people and our culture.
So please consider using your social networking skills and fight for justice to contact your elected official to change the Ambulance reimbursement rates.
Best of luck to you in your career!!
