Pros

Everything. Training, great benefits, great pay, and awesome teams. Ryder encourages promoting from within and if you work hard and prove yourself, you’ll move up. Training is done both online and in person. My own experience in the workforce / corporate America has always been minimal training however Ryder actually offers more than I expected. Transportation isn’t easy and definitely isn’t for everyone. One thing to understand is that it is very fast paced. If you know that this doesn’t fit your build / style, then I would suggest another industry. If you love the challenge, this is for you. You’ll work hard and it’ll take a little while for everything to click, but it’s not different in any other company. Employees are shown appreciation, from their directors/managers/all other departments and also from the company itself. We have a week of employee appreciation and Ryder also recognizes your work anniversary and birthday. On the rental side, I’ve also been shown appreciation by the VP for good CSI’s. You make your experience your own. My team is amazing, my managers and directors are outstanding and I have the support that I need to succeed. *Advice to those considering / current employees: The reality is you’ll get what you put in. Work hard, don’t be afraid to ask questions, learn the processes, get the trucks on the road and take care of the customers. It’s simple really, you just have to put in the work but that’s what we are there for, to work. Build strong relationships with your counterparts, managers / directors, shop, lease, and anyone else you run into that works with the company. Network. If you want to be promoted, work hard, ask for more responsibilities and prove yourself. This has nothing to do with corporate politics (some people see it this way), this has to do with life. Building relationships is everything. Also, know your chain of command. The higher the position is, the larger the teams and the bigger the problems are. This is why you have managers on a local level, to help you in a timely fashion. You have to truly understand management to understand the importance of chain of command. Again, this not corporate politics. This is a huge corporation with many employees for a reason. There are many moving pieces that take many people to handle. Think about that before you relate this knowledge to corporate politics. Proving yourself is key. Show interest in wanting to learn more, take advice from everyone you can, especially tenured employees, work as a team, give good feedback, help others out, put some extra time in and keep a positive mindset. Most importantly, stay out of drama. You don’t want to be in the mix of anything negative. You’re at work to work, not to create or be apart of a problem. Complaining about things never change anything, it just brings others down that are around you. Again, as I started this statement out, you get what you put in. You make this your own experience, you can either make it a great one or not. That is solely up to you. Overall, this is an amazing company, I don’t care what anyone has to say that disagrees with that. I’ve worked for other corporations and Ryder has been the best and most enjoyable work experience I’ve ever had.

Cons

Processes could be a little easier, Salesforce access for RAM’s would be awesome but these aren’t really cons. Every company has their own system and policies, so no need to complain about it, that won’t change anything, just do it the way they tell you and get it done. Balancing the work and personal life can be a challenge if you are “all in” but if you love your company / job, then putting in the extra time on your days off shouldn’t be an issue. After all, you are not only a reflection of the company, but also of your own self. Going the extra mile never hurt anyone and if anything, you make your customers very happy, which is the point, right? I personally put a lot of my time into Ryder, but that isn’t required of me, that is just something I do because I care and I love my job.

Fun but Tedious

Pros

Freedom to plan your own marketing strategy and work your own schedule. Fun building relationships with customers. The internal Ryder culture is professional and nice. They send all new hires to Miami for training and again every year or so. Commissions are uncapped so the earning potential is good if you do the work. Commission payout amounts are higher than those of competitor transportation companies. I loved the shop team, technicians and service managers. They are tenured and talented. There is real opportunities to get promoted into Lease sales. Stock options are good.

Cons

Higher commissions mean hire rates, so we often lose deals to our competition's cheaper rates. Rates are not negotiable, unless it's for a big deal. Success depends on having strong people at the rental counter, in the front of the line positions. There is a lot of turn over there and the new people make major mistakes that make your hard work obsolete. You're asked to mentor the counter representatives, but you have no authority over them. So they are often not held accountable when they make the same mistakes that cause you to lose a customer. When there are no counter reps due to promotion or turnover, you're responsible for working the counter for weeks, sometimes months. You are still required to log 300 - 350 marketing calls monthly, which depending on your manager, will be highly scrutinized and tracked on a daily basis. You also have to maintain an Excel workbook detailing all the deals you quoted that week. It is all very time consuming and will have you working early in the morning, late in the evenings, and weekends. Your note has to be in the system 48 hours prior to the customer activating their account or you will not get credit. There is a lot of suspicious caution surrounding the 48 hour rule and if a manager thinks you tried to play with the system regardless of your intentions, you can be terminated. The commission auditing process is becoming more and more scrutinized, meaning they are making it more difficult for you to get paid for your work. They have a 1-800 national line that customers call and national representatives will download reservations to duplicate accounts that may not already have your notes in place. So you lose credit for your work. Lastly, it's a very fast paced position. It's easy to get burnt out and jaded if you don't have support from your manager and rental counter representatives.

Pros

The ONLY good thing is the commission structure, you can make a bunch of money by doing very little.

Cons

Where do I start.....Management is heads and above the worst I've ever encountered. Middle management is a revolving door and to have a new manager for each year you are with the company is a regular occurrence. Poor selection process is where it starts(if you are a big enough sucker to relocate and take a low paying, lower management position(LRM or BRM) you are automatically looked at before other more qualified options), Ryder only considers past Ryder experience (anything you do prior to working there is not considered and as far as Ryder is concerned never happened). Ryder breeds managers not LEADERS! You will never be coached, encouraged or praised for good work. Managers don't lead by example they show up late and throw thier subordinates under the bus at every chance they get usually to save thier own jobs. Salaries for sales and management are far below industry standard and unless you are at Director level or above your ideas and thoughts don't matter. Directors are selfish and get to decide if other departments can consider you for promotions always putting their own immediate needs above yours and your future. Reductions in work force(RIFs) are a yearly occurrence which typically follow inept upper management over promising share holders on unattainable revenue and sales figures. Benefits(health) are awful and expensive. I only recommend Ryder to those who need something to hold them over until they find something better.
