Pros

People working at Ryerson are among the hardest working people in any industry or job. The benefits are good and comprehensive, the skill set acquired and knowledge gained working here are unmatched. You can run circles around anyone in your next job and make more money just because you're used to working yourself hard for less. The CEO seems to a lot more forward thinking than most.

Cons

Not only is this a "boys club" it's also an egocentric, and condescending environment. People are undervalued (maybe temporarily bought over with catered lunches and Ryerson gear) but stay to their desks 8 hours a day and asked to keep bathroom breaks to a minimum to make sure the phones are answered. Inter-department mistrust and hostility because management has fostered a culture of blame. Commission plans are purposely unclear and confusing (and commission is few and far between). Ryerson Academy is a pro and negative as it trains the company's potential future, but the company is not ready for the change or the future at all. Also, employees were once asked to write positive reviews.

Pros

The benefits were good; the pay was average; good people to work with

Cons

good ol' boys club. Not a lot of opportunity for growth, especially for women. Local management lacks integrity; no leadership nor critical thinking skills. It's a company that encourages blind allegiance to the strategy of the company.

Pros

We are experiencing an opportunity to reshape the steel service industry. The current and previous CEO's are from outside the service center industry, and have brought a different vision to a very traditional business in a very traditional industry. Our sights are no longer set on being the best in the metal service center industry, our sights are set on finding ways to compete with service leaders across all industries. The speed of change is brisk, yet manageable and a little refreshing for a long term employee! Its a good time to be part of Ryerson as we are outperforming the industry, and it feels like we have many competitors that are trying to keep up!

Cons

Not a con, but a reality. We are what we are....a steel service center & processing company. We are working to thrive in the manufacturing business in the US. Glitz and glamour we are not! Part of the backbone of the US manufacturing business we are!
