Stay away if you care about your career

Pros

food, low pressure, nothing else

Cons

SAS is filled with under achievers, incompetent employees. Average age is pretty high and most of the employees are 60+, think of it as a retirement center. Some of the directors are just like grandparents, you would sometimes need to go visit, talk to them about their health problems, their kids and if you start talking technical, they will not be able to understand at all. I was asked to explain one thing 6-7 times and each time they looked surprised. The salary is a lot under market rate, they easily pay half of your value that you can get other places. No raise, which is unbelievable and the bonus was like a joke (less than 3%). The 401k is only 3%, much less than other companies, which is probably why senior employees have to keep working at this age. No stock or profit sharing. As others said, the "best place to work" on fortune, etc must be rigged or bought or something. None of the employees I know have received any survey for that.

A "great place to work" with a major catch

Pros

Health insurance is great, retirement is good and work life balance is decent. I work with some very talented and supportive direct management and colleagues that make working every day worthwhile. The campus itself is a wonderful place to visit and work.

Cons

There has been a tension in the air for years about the future of the company. Benefits have been getting worse over time. It's starting to get worse. One of the major selling points to the lower salary many employees receive is the work life balance and the outstanding benefits. That's not as much of a mitigating factors and I don't see it getting any better. Hiring is frozen and there will be no raises this year across the board. Career opportunity feels very limited for those with high levels of ambition. The flat management structure is part of that and the low turnover is another. The company is getting hit by competitors on all sides and that's only going to keep going. SAS needs to find the secret sauce or we will get overtaken.
