Pros

Most departments have a very realistic attitude about work vs. life. Medical, gym, pool, cafeterias all available on a beautifully manicured campus decorated with sculpture. Everyone has a private office and there is an ergonomics department that will go to great lengths to make sure your body is comfortable. Vacation is average, pay is average.

Cons

There is no real career path. Skillsets can be very odd. Older employees (20+ yr veterans) are routinely pushed out of the company due to lack of current skills. Newer hires come in with more current programming skills. There is no scenario in which you would be rewarded for extraordinary effort, or for that matter fired for being a slacker. Most immediate managers are excellent, middle managers are average, upper management is clueless.

Great employer, but not ideal for young professionals

Pros

I've had the good fortune to have fantastic managers. They are friendly and supportive (assuming you do your job well). My coworkers are also very intelligent and competent. Depending on your area of the company, you may be able to work close to 35 hours per week. SAS offers a lot of free internal training on SAS and other topics. Benefits are great.

Cons

The famous 35 hour work week is not universal--some areas of the company require much longer work weeks. It is difficult to get funding for outside training. The pay is lower than for most competitors, and competition from open source software is cutting into raises and bonuses. Young professionals may enjoy the environment less, as the workforce is older and many of the benefits are geared toward employees with children. Long term prospects are less than ideal due to the reduction in raises and bonuses and a lack of upward mobility.

Great place to work

Pros

SAS is a great place to work. The company "hires hard and manages easy" and this has led to a great workplace environment. Employees are great and very nice/helpful and management is fairly "flat" and not overly intense -- they understand the work you are doing and the challenges.

Cons

I haven't really faced any of these issues, but because SAS is a great place to work there is not a lot of mobility in positions. Furthermore, I had heard that in the past SAS has not had the most competitive salaries, but have had a great benefits package -- from my understanding SAS has worked hard to offer competitive wages and still offer great benefits.
