Pros

Great creature comforts. Wonderful benefits and facilities, if you have a lifestyle that fits the company's vision.

Cons

SAS is full of the dumbest people I have ever worked with. It is the opposite of a meritocracy. There is no reward for hard work or excellence. People just fill a chair until retirement. Salary, benefits, vacation, even the office you get, all depend only on one thing: how long you've been there. The brightest person in the world could walk into SAS and in 3 years do the work of 20 of their coworkers, and still would make less than someone who has been there 4 years and done literally nothing. I know people who stopped coming into work all together. No one even noticed. The largess of the 25 year monopoly is starting to wear off. SAS does not innovate. They simply are riding out their reputation from the days when they did, and their wealth of recurring contracts. If you are a hard working person who tries to make a difference at their job, SAS will chew you up and spit you out. If you were a "D is for diploma!" kind of college graduate, and you happen to know somebody who already works at SAS, Welcome! It will be the best career you can get until you retire or SAS pisses off enough customers to no longer be able to drag along all the dead weight, whichever comes first.

Pros

Employee benefits (day care, health, adoption) are above industry norm, almost all US-based employees have their own office, company closes during week of Christmas, you can obtain 4 weeks of vacation after 10 years (plus Christmas), Great place for young workers direct from college or young families. Very few employees ever work over 38hrs per week and the company promotes this regularly. Majority of perks in the Cary HQ office....

Cons

Are you a Type A personality and career driven? You'll leave in months or bow down before mediocrity. Salaries and bonus are far below tech industry average so SAS does not pursue industry top talent. The executives in R&D, marketing, sales have been there for 10+ years and no one will rock-the-boat or depart so upward mobility is non-existent. The 95% employee retention is not a benefit to be promoted, but curse to career growth. Majority of employees have no defined bonus plan/payout. Found it common to be offered 3x bonus working at IBM, HP, RedHat.

Pros

Beautiful facilities, great health benefits, child care, work life balance for people with families.

Cons

What used to be groundbreaking benefits is now financed by low salaries and is on par with many other US or local companies. There is federal government like atmosphere where longevity is rewarded over ingenuity or hard work. Nepotism and favoritism run rampant and are reflected in promotions and pay increases. Employees with children are given great work life balance often at the expense of coworkers who do not have a family. Large profits do not trickle down to employees.
