Pros

Good benefits. The health care center, the gym, the cafes, all the add ons if you work on campus are great. Great people you can meet and work with.

Cons

The salaries at SAS are embarrassingly below market, and HR’s constant fallback on “great benefits” ignores the reality that the market has caught up and surpassed SAS. The idea that SAS is the best place to work has become an echo chamber in upper management and HR, disconnected from employees’ realities. Many of us have friends and colleagues with the same experience and education making $40K+ more elsewhere. No meaningful raises in the past three years, despite the current economy, is unacceptable. Employees have no clear idea what is happening in the next few months or year, whether it’s an IPO, stocks, or any concrete plans because management keeps everyone in the dark. It’s obvious to those outside management that there’s chaos at the top, and the stress is pushed down to employees, with empty promises of improvement year after year. Meanwhile, some of the best people have already left, and many more are looking elsewhere. Everyone on my team is actively seeking other opportunities except for those looking at retirement packages in the next 2-3 years. If you’re considering joining SAS, I don’t recommend it. SAS is not what it used to be…and hasn’t been for at least six years.

Pros

They have some good benefits and some genuinely great people working there

Cons

Many departments pushing software products have no idea what they are doing and have zero direction. They fail a lot and that seems to be perfectly fine within the culture there. A lot of the leadership is extremely old and they are in severe need of dynamic and more with the times thinking. Communication is severely lacking within my department.

Pros

Leader in the Analytics market segment for the past 4 decades delivering the SAS 9.x platform and solutions based on that legacy analytics platform. The company has a strong brand identity among statistics majors and "math people". Data scientists do pretty well at SAS with an endless supply of data scientist consulting opportunities to shine

Cons

So focused on Analytics as a discipline, software development as a discipline suffers. The company views delivering Analytic Insights "The Power to Know" as the primary deliverable, rather than delivering great software that happens to be great software focused on Analytics. This isn't meant to be a huge slam against them. It is just a shift in emphasis which I believe puts the company about 10 years behind the industry on cloud readiness given the huge success of their legacy Analytics platform (SAS 9.x). Often past success can sustain so much momentum that it takes a Herculean effort to build the modern replacement platform deployable and scalable in the cloud. It's never too late to supply the market with a great cloud platform for Analytics, but being late does leave a lot of opportunity on the table that will never be realized. More importantly it allows competitors like Google and Amazon to develop their own in-house analytics capabilities and expertise, and they have.
