Pros

Very 2000 dotcom environment with snacks, coffee, soda readily available. Midtown Manhattan office.

Cons

No good work goes unpunished. You must account for every second of your day. You are often required to spend more time writing up a report on what you did in a day, than actually doing any work. You can get a glowing performance review and get fired three days later. Being late to work from circumstances out of your control (like being stuck on the subway and thus being unable to notify your manager that you will be late because you are in a tunnel with no cell signal) is a fire-able offense.

Thank you for sharing this feedback with our team. We are disappointed to hear that you didn't feel support and trust as it relates to being late to work due to subway delays. This is not something we have ever fired someone for because we are generally flexible and understanding to these types of circumstances - especially in NYC when subways are delayed so often. We try to treat everyone like an adult and ask that everyone maintain good communication with their managers when they will be out of the office. This is a standard guideline for many organizations. With regards to abrupt terminations, unfortunately this may sometimes happen at any business and it's not taken lightly or without immense thought and consideration. Performance reviews will typically align with disciplinary action, but there could be a situation where a role is no longer needed at the organization based on a variety of factors. Decisions like these are difficult and we do our best to ensure that involuntary terminations are handled with a lot of care and support for the individual so they have as smooth of a transition as possible. We truly appreciate this tough feedback and welcome further feedback to help us improve the employee experience at Novus. Feel free to contact us at talent@novus.com if you wish to discuss further.

Pros

Novus is a small company with great employees. The type of work we do in the financial sector is always ground breaking. Management is always coming up with new and interesting project ideas, and developers are given lots of leeway over how to complete the project. Developers take full responsibility over the project. Developers are expected to be agile, and scope changes are frequent. Our company has regular meetings to sync up and share accomplishments. Our "Friday Fuel Ups" are a chance for people to ask the CEO questions, and for employees to share key wins. Our quarterly meetings are great too, with plenty of free food and a spot bonus award given to the most accomplished employee. Novus knows how to treat its employees good. The work life balance here is great. Managers don't hassle you to stay late, and you get unlimited vacation days, with no questions asked. In the past, the company has sponsored camping trips, ski trips and annual dinners. Health insurance, sick days, gym memberships and stock options are also provided. Just lots of great perks.

Cons

No hand holding at Novus. New employees are expected to learn fast and produce results fast. You will check in code your first week. No egos allowed here. You are expected to be humble and listen to your peers. We are a meritocracy. Employees will be asked to leave if they are not productive. Our open office floor plan is loud sometimes. Expect to be interrupted multiple times a day. Scope creep in projects is very common. Project deadlines are very lenient.

Exciting Potential

Pros

Great benefits including insurance and gym membership. Fully stocked kitchen, ping pong, Wii and most importantly - darts. Company-wide focus on internal transparency. Surrounded by extremely talented people and teams. Strong work ethic and healthy life/work balance encouraged (unlimited vacation). Excellent weekly manager catch-ups involving honest conversation. Motivated people and bubbling potential - you can feel it.

Cons

Small and short lived gaps in the transparency structure, which is otherwise solid. Could do with a stronger system inviting cross-team discussion and idea/concept development. Unfortunate gendered commentary isn't uncommon. If you are able and willing to stick it out until it improves then great. It will change and soon. Lacking in the diversity of employees (gender, race, ethnicity). Not currently ideal but systems are being put in place as I type to equalize it. Very excited for the potential of Novus but its a matter of whether you're up to it in this moment in time.
