Pros

You really can't beat the benefits. Fully paid healthcare for you and your family. You'll learn a lot and take on big responsibilities which is good for your résumé. The members are awesome and you're working for a great cause. If you're lucky you'll get one of the good managers who respects your work life balance and helps you grow. There are some great genuine people that work here.

Cons

It's almost impossible to get a substantial raise and promotion opportunities are limited. Especially if you're not in the inner circle. Much of the management is out of touch with employees and expects us to drop everything to work a weekend last minute. There's a very high turnover of field staff, and even if you're not field you will have to door knock and participate in all the campaigns. It's a good place to work for a couple years because you'll gain a lot of experience but don't get sucked into staying too long.

Pros

Benefits are great, especially Medical and Pension!

Cons

Please believe the negative reviews for SEIU! I have never worked for such a demeaning company! Unfortunately, what the company says it fights for as worker rights, is not what happens for its own employees. It’s an oxymoron, but this Union is “Anti-Union” for its own workers! Many of these employees are wonderful young adults and do not have the skills or knowledge of what is acceptable treatment from a direct supervisor and employer. Male Management of External Organizers verbally harasses and bullies employees, especially women! Male Management is extremely misogynistic and machismo! Male Managements demeanor is very militaristic, no one can know more than him and he is always right, even when he is wrong! Most employees would just comply, apologize and become quiet and withdrawn with Management’s constant snide, demeaning and emasculating comments because they were afraid of being fired. I saw a new employee stand up to him in front of everyone after Management targeted her for days, the new employee was fired! All new employees knew that specific employee was made an example! It’s extremely demoralizing to see your coworkers stripped of their dignity, ideas and self for Management’s ego! Employees are berated and made fun of, not in a funny way, in front of other coworkers for asking questions about the topics Management was teaching and/or discussing. Beware… this has been happening for YEARS! Happens DAILY and no employee is immune, especially women!
