Pros

The work of SEIU builds power for workers and changes lives for the better.

Cons

Mary Kay Henry's regime has been brutal toward its staff and created a culture in which no talented person should expect to have a career at SEIU.

Pros

Employees are represented by CWA, PERU. Great benefits. Permanent staff get 5 paid days off/month and 5 floating holidays around Christmas. Seasonal staff are rehired annually as per the rehire roster in the CBA.

Cons

Leadership lacks of professionalism and respect necessary to sustain union values and employee retention. High turn over rate due to closed-door leadership style and management deligation to ill-skilled, lead staff. Employees who begin as seasonal or limited duration staff are often bullied and dismissed by their leads, supervisor, and especially the director. The office is infested with ants and roaches. Staff are constantly sick and some staff are of the anti-vaccination mind set. Anti-immigrant beliefs are widely practiced to the extent that hate rhetoric is approved and in some cases encouraged in personal and public spaces such as the front desk. It can be a depressing and toxic environment from the top down.

Pros

Very forward thinking, inclusive, major player when it comes to moving the democratic and often progressive agenda. The most innovative union alive.

Cons

It can be a very political place to work. There is a level of deceitfulness when hiring organizers, many hopefuls just out of college are made to believe this is a certain kind of job and many many many quickly learn this is churn and burn atmosphere, there is not a commitment for professional development of employees. Many organizers will work a minimum of 50 hours a week sometimes up to 80 during campaigns. work/life balance is non-existent so forget about this job if you have a family or young children.
