Pros

I had a very flexible work schedule, a great boss, and decent opportunities for personal development.

Cons

I saw a lot of science staff struggle badly. There seemed to be a deficit of infrastructure to support the scientific work that is nominally the lab's mission. Pay is not enough to live on a single salary in the area.

Thank you for your feedback. We recognize that the Bay Area is a very expensive place to live. We look at both internal equity and market data for our salary ranges. We are also working with Stanford on affordability issues as a part of their long-range planning process. We are glad you had a great boss and opportunities for professional growth.

Pros

Once you get onboard, you'll be partnered up with mentors (staff scientists) who are incredibly friendly, approachable, and knowledgable. Management will do their best to match you with people who can help you reach your goals. CS, EE, ME, Math, Physics, Chem/Bio majors galore. Your projects will be hands-on, and meaningful. Definitely a great place to work if you've got the fundamentals down and you're looking for solid and impressive experience. SLAC is huge. Great cafeteria, and on-site Starbucks. Nice gym with a basketball court, fitness classes, loads of equipment, soccer field, indoor and outdoor volleyball, etc. Monthly BBQs. When you have down time, I highly recommend going to different buildings and connecting with people in other departments. Everyone seems to be highly approachable and connections can lead you to great places.

Cons

Chemical and civil engineering majors won't find too much to do. You'll have to pick up some new skills (programming, for example).

Pros

Working with a lot of brilliant, passionate people - their love for discovery and pushing scientific boundaries to further our understanding of life is contagious. Management has the right intention for the lab’s culture and collaboration. The lab director is a delight to work with, humble and always happy to chat with employees as he wanders around... from students to ops staff to scientists. His drive for a more collaborative scientific community, beyond just this lab, is what’s needed. On the practical side, being part of the Stanford community is wonderful and the employee benefits (healthcare, study allowance, retirement matching, wellness programs, etc) are certainly attractive. They’re quite supportive of continued learning and balanced, healthy living.

Cons

Management seems to get pulled into the latest management fads that new department directors bring with them, eg HR or finance. So while I believe their heart is in the right place, it can be a bit confusing for employees to keep up with the latest requirements and terminology for, say, performance reviews or strategic planning. Seems to be stabilizing now though. Often decisions made by management about people and programs (which have significant impact on both) are made without planning or due considerations of consequences, and often without the input of those affected. Then they wonder why there’s pushback when they try to roll something out. Federal bureaucracy can make it difficult to do what’s right when it’s needed, so instead of spending the money now to prevent operational problems, it can often feel like the lab only makes the necessary changes when something happens to force the change/improvement (eg providing systems and tools for people to do their jobs more efficiently/safely/compliantly). The money will first go to the science. But... such is its mission.
