Pros

SM Energy is a great company and there are many talented and intelligent people that work there. Tony Best is a terrific CEO an the benefits are great.

Cons

While benefits are great, the salaries are less than average for the industry. The operations accounting group has had problems for years. Management at one point had to go around to everyone and apologize for one of the accounting managers they hired (then fired) who turned out to be a little crazy. Turnover is very high in the operations accounting group. Compared to the rest of the company, the employees and supervisors in this group are very unprofessional. The operations accounting group even has a bad reputation within the company. Stay Away!

Pros

The benefits are great and Tony Best is a great CEO.

Cons

The accounting group, specifically the assistant controller is very unprofessional. While I was there he created a lot of drama, hired and then fired 5 very qualified supervisors in less than a two year period. His group had the most turnover by far in the company. When I left there were 3 lawsuits in the works directed at the operations accounting group. SM Energy is a great company, however, I would advise that job seekers stay away from the operations accounting group. I was very embarrassed to be a part of that group while I was there.

Pros

Work environment composes of a friendly, knowledgeable, and cooperative staff with various backgrounds. Most employees haven't been with the company longer than 3 years. Great pay and benefits. Great culture that recognizes not only performance, but character. Senior management is very communicative, upbuilding, and pro-active. The CEO gets to know YOU. Good communication from your supervisor regarding what will effectively get you promoted.

Cons

Technical sharing primarily in silos, but that may be addressed shortly. No real data management focus, ut that is changing. Somewhat chaotic professional development planning. Fast growth has strained some cross functional relationships and business processes.
