Pros

Benefits. Number of days of Vacation. 401(k).

Cons

SRA is a staff augmentation company, although it may want to become a product company. When one's contract runs out, it is up to the employee to find a new position; despite statements to the contrary, internal mobility and the HR Business Partner do not help one find a new position. If an employee is "in" with the right group of managerial staff, it is much easier to navigate the waters. Management expects an employee to engage in volunteer activities. The different Sectors (security, civil, etc) do not work together well and it is hard for an employee to cross from one to another - largely because the Sector must take responsiblity for the employee's costs.

Pros

The work life balanace is good. There is very little pressure to perform but that also means there isn't much reward when you do perform. The benefits are good and pretty much all encompassing. There are a few interesting projects to work on, but not as many as you would like to see. There aren't a lot of people who have to travel on a regular basis, so if you are looking to stay in the area where you live this is a good place. As long as you perform well enough you are pretty much left alone to do your job.

Cons

Limited advancement beyond a certain level. Work is commotitized. Acquired companies are fairly siloed and are not valued as much as they could be. It is hard to break into upper management even if you are talented. Pay scale is good for junior and some mid-level positions but it tops out once you are a Principal or higher unless you are one of the top 10 or so employees. There isn't a great pay for performance model. They say this is something they are working on, but we haven't seen any changes. It takes a long time to change anything at SRA.

Pros

I have found the upper middle management within my business unit and sector to be pretty fantastic. They are smart, capable, and excellent managers who generally look out for their people. It's too bad none of these fantastic leaders run the company. There is a relatively good work/life balance culture within the company, which I believe is due in part to the company's demographics skewing towards the older end of the spectrum and many of these mid to late career workers value time with family and away from the office more than work for works sake. The downside of this is that it is very expensive to insure the companies employees, so the medical benefits are expensive and not all that great.

Cons

Very, very, very bureaucratic. The bureaucracy, layers of approval, and copious amounts of process make even the most menial of internal tasks--such as reimbursements--frustrating and more difficult tasks--such as proposals and contract management-- infuriating. Don't even try bucking the system, as it is thoroughly resistant to bucking. While I am sure that there are some excellent leaders in the company's upper echelons, the overall direction of the company has been pretty feckless over the last year. Take as examples losing the recompete of the company's largest contract and a single day, 35% drop in the companies stock price tied to a botched acquisition.
