Pros

This is a large company. The benefits are good. Employees are usually given a yearly cost of living raise. I really like many of my fellow employees

Cons

The management is out of touch with the direct care workers, telling employees to do things that are not in their scope of practice, not in their job descriptions, giving advice and suggestions that make more useless work for the direct care workers. Very hard to take a planned vacation because you asked for time off months before you want it and get told at the last minute you can take it, no time to plan or you only get half of the time off. I have been employed with SSM Health for about 6 years and have received 1 -5 day vacation and was told 2 days before it was to start that is was approved. Management takes quite a bit of vacation. Every since I have been employed at this company we are always short staffed. It is management's excuse for everything. The SSM Health Insurance only is in network with SSM providers. If you work in behavioral health you have to use a provider that you work with to be in network, this is a huge behavioral health violation(dual relationship, conflict of interest, privacy concerns). Management has been aware of this for some time now and the matter has not been resolved. At times, there is not enough staff on BH unit to keep people safe. Certain managers will act if they are providing help for their employees in the presence of their supervisor but it is a show. Employees are given an across the board raise when raises are provided. Employees are not merited for performing or penalized for under performing. There is no incentive for excelling. An employee can work over time, stay after hours, show great initiative and they may receive a 2 out of a 4 in their yearly performance review. There is little effort in lower management to retain employees who have excellence skills, this cause lack of continuity of care and patients and other employee suffer.
