Lots of gossip, not much work ethic

Pros

Flexible work environment, nice offices. Started at a very low salary but received reasonable pay increases every 6 months/year. Salary seemed to cap-out in my last year with no foreseeable opportunity to increase it further. My salary capped-out well below industry average and well below what I was ultimately offered elsewhere.

Cons

More time was spent gossiping, belittling and making fun of other employees than working. It was disrespectful and left me feeling desperately unfulfilled at the end of each day. Pretending to work was fun for a while but got old fast. Little in the way of guidance or expectations. So many people are hired/fired/promoted/demoted based on their familiarity to the founding family, regardless of academic background, skills or experience. There is a huge elaborate Christmas party each year meanwhile employees have to pay for a measly cup of coffee from the employee kitchen. It's rather puzzling for a company that has a monopoly on what it does, globally. Two star rating because the they paid me and the job was overall low-moderate stress/low-moderate work load most of the year with opportunity for travel.

Pros

Beautiful building. Owner is genuine and nice and built the business from scratch.

Cons

As a developer you are not involved in any part of the decision making process, it is decided for you. But you are expected to work with very little requirements, which can change dramatically during the development cycle. Unfortunately there seems to be no long term goals. They might have goals, but those are not shared with the developers. On many projects, key aspects are controlled by one individual programmer, who is only available 4-5 hours each day. Any questions about process are immediately deflected to the department head, as no one else is allowed to make any decisions.

Not Worth It

Pros

Rarely have to work over 40 hours a week. Good gym membership discount.

Cons

Pay is way below industry standard for most jobs. There is no room for career advancement. Many people have been working there for 10+ years. You will never advance in the company. They say they care about having a family friendly environment, but allows for little flexibility. Not allowed to telecommute unless you are SVP level or higher. There is a bunch of dumb things that the company could do to raise moral like not charge for coffee. Even if you are salary you have to clock in and out of the time system - they check to make sure you are not even one minute late.
