Pros

academic institutions tend to have a lot more resources especially if you are fresh graduate and keep wanting to use some of the resources or networking. State schools also tend to have more job 'security' -- as long as the country's economy is stable.

Cons

budget cuts hiring freeze hasn't helped. you're working for a larger system, so you may or may not have the freedom that you need. your employer may be cool, but there is a larger system s/he is accountable to that may be very uptight. the job openings i came across while looking into getting into a more permanent job were very low pay entry level jobs that sent out job description that demanded advanced skills.
