Pros

Some of the best reasons to work for Safeway would be that you get paid weekly and you also get a discount when shopping there. Corporate also promotes you giving your club card number or phone number to family & friends so they will also receive the employee discount when shopping. The discount is 10% off all Lucerne/Safeway products plus an additional 5% on all other national brands. If you are a careful shopper, you can save upwards between 20-30+% off your shopping bill.

Cons

The downsides of working at Safeway are many and far outweigh the pros. You have to join the union and there is an initiation fee which gets taken out in increments over your first 6 paychecks. The initiation fee varies between departments, however it is a substantial amount regardless of which dept. you are in. Besides the initiation fee, there are monthly union dues as well as dues for benefits which are all thru the union. The union is supposed to step in and help you have a problem with management, etc. but don't be fooled - they don't help. Also, the new contract that you work under sucks when it comes to working holidays and over-time, etc. the old contract gets older employees triple time for holidays - new hires now only get a dollar extra onto their regular hourly pay for holidays and working holidays is pretty much mandatory. If you are caucasion, you are a minority and basically get treated like one. This is a terrible place to work where they over-work you but reprimand you for staying late to finish all your work - it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't workplace.

Pros

Safeway pharmacy utilizes pharmacists in all levels of management and is a leader in pharmacy care.

Cons

Retail pharmacy is difficult everywhere to document what we are doing and still have time to help improve the lives of our patients. Paperwork is getting much worse.
