Pros

decent campus free gym career growth in some departments friendly people for the most part

Cons

management is poor not all departments have a good career growth for their employees not a good reward system for hard workers too many older people work there that there is no room for new fresh ideas and growth for those who are young and eager to move up (and probably have some great ideas)

Pros

The primary reason to work for Safeway is the 10 percent discount employees receive on Safeway branded items. If you plan your grocery shopping carefully, you can really save a a fair amount of money. The next best reason is the company's work life balance. Safeway really promotes a great work life balance and with the support of senior managment, every employee is afforded the opportunity to be with family as needed!

Cons

The primary cons for working at Safeway are: 1. The politics - Safeway is a very large and a very matrix organization and so there's often a high level of 'maneuvering' that's required in order to get things done. 2. Lack of information sharing - Safeway lacks a central knowledge base repository where all pertinent information can be captured, categorized and pulled when needed. Most information is tacitly held by employees who are driven by the idea that they are 'more valuable' if they keep their knowledge contained. 3. Widespread favoritism - In the years that I have worked for Safeway, I have found that one's success if determined by who you know and how well you know them. If you smooze with the right management team (or manager) you get the better assignments and as a result, you get better visability for your work. This leads to better positions and more promotions. Just doing your job and doing well is not enough.

Pros

Job security, experienced leadership, many members of management have been with Safeway for over 20 years. Opportunities to learn additional skills and gain training in new areas which could lead to promotions. Excellent job in a recession.

Cons

50-60 hours per week 24/7, open holidays and weekends. Very demanding work and expectations with no annual raise or additional time off. Software is outdated for various positions.
