Pros

not a stressful environment. lots of money to spend with vendors. stable employment. provide a pension.

Cons

very little room for advancement if you don't know how to work the system. very little attrition. low compensation compared to other companies. Only compensate well to those who are still working here after 30 years. Too many managers, directors, group directors, vice presidents, group vice presidents, you get the picture.

Pros

Employee discount on Safeway brand products at grocery store. Balance of life is good, can leave by 5pm. We are encouraged to take time off during the holidays at headquarters.

Cons

Poor leadership, high value on relationships and tenure rather than competency. Many decisions are made behind closed doors and not communicated. It's a very conservative company.

A Decent Company to Work For

Pros

Safeway is a stable company with many opportunities for advancement. The pay and benefits are decent once you have enough time invested. If you enjoy interacting with people it is a great place to work.

Cons

The hours can be fairly inconsistent, and starting off the pay and benefits are poor at best. Due to unionization much is based on seniority, i.e. the old timers get the best pay and benefits, the most vacation time, and greater control over their schedule. While some managers are great and take care of their employees, many are terrible and can make your work life miserable. Morale crushing paperwork that never ends and is constantly growing, and an overly aggressive service program which is really about forcing products on our customers, not providing great service.
