Pros

Best reasons are for the benefits and the fact that once you are union you pretty much just have to show up to keep your job. Decent pay for journeyman food clerks, GREAT pay when you consider how much you would make at a retail store performing similar tasks.

Cons

High turnover rate. Non-serious/dedicated employees (typically age 16-21 crowd). New hires fall under new contract that requires insane amounts of hours to achieve decent pay, yet still are expected to work as hard as the higher payed employees. A lot of flexibility is required, basically if you are not in school you have to be available all the time. It can take a long time to get a set schedule.

Pros

It has been a good company. The company has changed a lot in the last 10 years. The pay and benefits are not very good as they once were. The quality of employees Safeway attracts as new hires reflect this. Many of the long term employees have college degrees, but the job pay and benefits kept them at Safeway.

Cons

The company has changed a lot. You are just a number now. The company has no loyalty towards their employees any longer.
