Pros

This is a stable industry in and economic downturn where you don't have to worry about job consolidation or elimination. You also do not have to worry about stores closing. They have a very nice employee activity program that costs a dollar per week to participate but allows discounted ticket prices for sports venues and theme parks etc.

Cons

You are only a pawn. A small pawn. There is very poor communication within the stores. You are only spoken to by management when something needs to be corrected or addressed. There is never a thank you or a kudos for solid performance. Everyone is treated like they are incompetent, kind of like it is your first job all over again. The expectations for neatness and visuals are nearly impossible to maintain. Not much focus on basic practices such as rotating dates or markdowns. Instead if it appears that you are in control of your job you are pulled to another area of the store to pull someone else's weight.

Pros

For a starter position within an enterprise, this place is good because even if you screw up, you wont get fired. But thats all this place is good for is to get your feet wet and get some experience.

Cons

Almost everything else that you can think of. Retirement plan is atrocious, training is non-existent, knowledge experts that don't know anything are abundant, office politics is like watching TV...you'd only think stuff like that can happen in TV, antiquated management, antiquated equipment, trust me, this is not a place you really want to work if you can avoid it.

Pros

There are very few reasons to work at Safeway, one being that it looks great on a resume. The second being the 10% discount on all Safeway products.

Cons

Well, its nickname is Slaveway for a reason. They schedule you very little hours and expect you to get all of the jobs they assign to you done in three hours. I often would stay one hour or more over to finish my work (and I'm not slow). The whole time their complaining about how I should have it done by then. Well the reason its not done was incompetent employees the day before don't know how to do their job, so I have to do half of their job along with mine. I asked my Manager numerous times for more hours because I'm one of their better employees, did that happen? No, I ask for one day off and I get a while week off. Let me remind you that I can count on one hand the number of days I've taken off in a year. The pay is horrible because they can easily get some 16 year old dimwit off the street and he can do any job in the store. Or we can keep good employees and give them raises instead of this 50 cents an hour bonus on Sundays bulls**t. Why would I work two times harder than 3/4 of the employees in the store and still get the same pay? Safeway seriously needs to rethink their employee first profit second way of doing business. Oh, and we are REQUIRED to ask for donations to any special program that's going on or we get talked to by management and a "NO" on our shops. Ah, the things Safeway does to look good in the public eye. Needless to say there's a reason why I no-longer work there after one and a half years of hell.
