Pros

Safeway is a large, generally very stable company that offers a wide variety of positions in many different areas to try. It is also a company that promotes from within, and presents internal opportunities at many levels. It is a successful Fortune-60 company that will be around for years to come. Safeway is also a socially and environmentally conscious organization.

Cons

Safeway has been in the retail business for a long time and it shows. A good amount of people working there have been doing so for many years, and 30-yr veterans are not uncommon. The benefits package is a bit outdated (with a pension plan, and no 401k match), and many of the policies are consistent with what you'd expect to see 10-20 years ago. Safeway's management does not focus much energy on providing a work-life balance, and the way people conduct business is very old-fashioned. Generally, the environment is siloed and non-collaborative, with senior managers holding their particular areas very close.

Not a good company

Pros

Some of my coworkers were very nice.

Cons

The management is awful and condescending. I have never been treated as poorly as I was, belittled by higher-ups, than I was at Safeway. I now understand why a significant number of Safeway locations in Colorado and California went on strike mid-2025. How understaffed, underpaid, under-appreciated we are here, when we're just coming to work to earn a living and get treated so badly by management.

Pros

Your personal development depends on your own ingenuity. Due to the lack of actual direction/teaching/guiding, you often have to resolve to personal problem solving. This gives you the opportunity to develop yourself.

Cons

Due to the lack of actual training for virtually any management position, that takes into consideration the actual job at hand, this creates undue stress, pressure and panic at times as you are held to standards and accountabilities even though you have never properly been trained to solve them.
