Great people and mission, fast-moving and ever-changing

Pros

I thoroughly enjoyed everyone I worked with. My co-workers were smart, dedicated, and fun to be around. I feel the organization is making a meaningful impact in the world. Management actively seeks out feedback from employees and works to improve areas that are challenging for employees.

Cons

My job title, manager, and responsibilities changed frequently due to turnover and shifting priorities. I was constantly taking on new projects and putting others on the back burner. It sometimes felt like we were chasing things rather than setting a strategy and pursuing it.

Regarding shifting priorities, we hear you. We're making an effort as a management team to develop a more robust strategic plan and had our first international offsite together in February. We feel like we've been running so fast to keep up with the changes in the tech landscape that we've not given this adequate due. Pros

This organization is outcomes driven; constantly striving to evaluate and re-evaluate how to deepen and broaden impact. Impact sourcing is hard, especially in a competitive environment. However, the desire to continue experimenting, investing, succeeding and sometimes failing, makes this an incredibly inspiring place to work. I am consistently amazed at the maturity and caliber of talent this organization has.

Cons

Working in a budget constrained environment can be challenging. With a mission as broad as solving poverty, it can be tempting to lose focus and drive too many initiatives.

This review really strikes a chord because I've been unfocused in the past and, with input from the management team, trying to learn from our collective experience -- we had to divest some initiatives that weren't tightly aligned with our core "give work" model. We've been promoting from within a lot more in the last year, with key roles in sales, project management, communications, and operations developed from our existing talent pool of amazing people. Thank you for believing in us!

Great mission, sometimes needs help with execution

Pros

Samasource is full of smart and enthusiastic people. People are generally eager to help you when you need it. There's tons of room for growth. For a non-profit, their compensation packages are pretty competitive.

Cons

While there may be tons of room for growth, the path for that growth is not always well defined. Also, the passion about the mission can actually lead to burn out quickly. The company needs to be more proactive in not allowing its people to get to that point.

Thanks for this candid and thoughtful feedback (especially about the comp, as we're doing all we can do make it competitive for a non-profit). Your view on prioritization is spot-on. This isn't always visible to employees, but in the past we've been dragged in different directions based on funding availability -- grants are often won by pitching new ideas as funders are reluctant to fund core operating costs. We've shifted things around considerably in our fundraising strategy to try to move away from this, but it affects nonprofits all the time and is one of the major challenges in getting to scale. Finally, we are making some organizational changes in the coming months that will focus us a lot more. I look forward to seeing how you feel about this in six months.
