It has been a mixed bag of feelings, worked with some really great people, but their is to much bureaucracy and regs.
Pros
Excellent benefits package. Usually off for all major holidays. A lot of great volunteers, youth, and professionals to work with! A lot of good training at all levels. The mission and core values are second to none!! Their is a lot of variety in the job. Pay Scale is reasonable.
Cons
Way to many rules and regulations. Paper work is second only to the U.S. government! American Society has become to sports obsessed, to busy and hectic for youth and adults a like, and to selfish to support a non-profit organizations with long term objectives like the B.S.A. Top management at National and Local councils, expect way to much from the professional in the field and the adult volunteers. Due to the ever expanding complexity and over regulated organization the B.S.A. is gradually shrinking in size and number. The B.S.A. is to corporate in its management and is to goal driven and numbers obsessed and basically unkind to front line professional staff in what they ask of them! The very long hours of work needed to accomplish the goals, all lead to a unbalanced work to home life balance. This organization gives a whole new meaning to very extreme multi-tasking! Despite all this, I still love scouting and wish I could have been able to improve the organization more myself. We all have to assume responsibility for what this institution could have been, if we had made better choices! Never the less, their is always hope and prayer for a better tomorrow.
