Pros

You work with wonderful volunteers that love this program. It pays pretty well, and is pretty flexible day-to-day (leave and come in to the office on your own schedule). Many of the office staff have been with the organization a long time, and if you don't like your job your chances of moving to something else are high.

Cons

Work comes first no matter what. Personal schedules (family vacations, anniversaries, family emergencies) are not taken seriously. You are often asked to work nights and weekends, and sometimes entire summers are spent away from your home. It isn't a great job for someone with a family. Also, because we rely heavily on individual contributions, we often "run short" on our budget.

Pros

They are super flexible about working there. Now the office culture and staff differ in every council, but at the Heart of America Council, it's great. We have good leadership, competent bosses and it's a pretty relaxed place to work. You have a nice mix of office work and time spent in the field. You have many projects to do at once, so you must manage your time well. If a family/emergency/doctors/ anything pops up, you can easily take care of it. Very family friendly.

Cons

The advancement opportunities are what they are. You will spend about 3 years working as a district executive/district director and then you can either move up or move to another council. Both have their advantages/disadvantages. Depending on what size of a council that you work for, staying at your current location might not give you the desired promotion that you are looking for. On the other hand, moving to another council is usually the fastest and sometimes easiest way for promotion, providing that you don't mind moving to another council. If you do decide to stay at your council, it might take longer than you would like to move into another position. But staying at your current council gives you the chance to build upon your success and your personal connections.
