Pros

The hospital I worked for was amazing, everyone was kind and the environment was exciting. Learned a lot on the job. Fellow scribes were excellent and capable.

Cons

No raise during COVID-19 pandemic except for the mandatory minimum wage hike on the company. No hazard or bonus pay for working through the pandemic. Prior to pandemic, maximum raise per year was ~$0.25, and only if you jump through hoops (3 quizzes per year). They attempted at one point to revoke my prior raises, I put up a fuss and they allowed me to remain at the pay I was receiving but continued to pay me less than that anyway until I again reminded them that I was to be making more. Higher ups ignored repeated pleas to hire new scribes when understaffed as long as current staff were covering all shifts — meaning one or more staff working overtime consistently. Everyone was burnt out and “scribe training” that is pushed prior to in-person training is useless in practice. Chief scribes, despite managing scheduling as well as training and managing new hires that are (eventually) sent their way, are paid only $1 extra per hour over new scribe recruits. Insulting to the chief scribes that work hard.

Pros

The experience was amazing, especially for someone who has never worked in healthcare before.

Cons

The pay was disrespectful. Even when my state's minimum wage increased past $10/hour, they kept us at minimum wage... The long hours and mental and physical toll it took on my health was worth so much more. I felt under-appreciated.

Pros

Experience in billing, shadowing procedures and history taking, etc.

Cons

Long and busy shifts are tiring, but the patients and professional interactions make it worthwhile!
