Pros

Depending on your physician, you can learn a great deal. You definitely get a chance to learn about what a physician would do in each situation. Especially with outpatient specialties, you'll have a chance to understand a specialty well and learn to expect what a physician would dictate and do for certain patient cases.

Cons

Poor management. Incredibly sketchy about your hours and cross training (after being a hire for a full time, I worked barely 8 hours a week for about 4 months because I was still "training"). I can't even say I was a crappy scribe, because I was the first one to complete training out of my group, and was scribing on my own after only the 2nd day of floor training. They just kept prolonging giving me hours and really avoided any conversation about it for the next few months. Project leaders have selective response to certain employees. They want you to commit for a year, and have a 6 month transfer policy if you want to transfer within company, but if you do try to transfer in 6 months, you're a disgrace to the company and will probably be shunned to oblivion, even though you are still transferring within the company and keeping your promise of that 1 year commitment. After that, forget about communicating with your project leader, you might as well be sending emails to Santa because you will not be getting a response anytime soon. The pay, the pay is terrible. Even scribing solo for a physician already pays me $12/hr off the bat, why does ScribeAmerica actually only give you $10/hr is horrifying, especially when you work all day (8hours), and don't have a break if your physician decides not to take a break that day and no one is there to cover you (which I'm pretty sure is against policy). Whoever is reading this, please don't get the idea that I am writing this because I am bitter or anything, the other scribes that I worked with were also horrified with management. The first 3 months we were there, we had to group after work and decide how to approach our JPL or PL and half of the time we did not have the guts to approach them because of their attitudes. They make the company seem so great, and it is, with great intentions, but their management is just awful.

Pros

- Good experience working with and learning medical terminology. - Great exposure to physicians and to EHR systems. If this is a part-time, temporary (emphasis on part-time) job just to get some experience with physicians then this could be a good job for you.

Cons

- All of the VPs/managers with whom I interacted were incompetent and seemingly only interested in gossip and drama. - Micromanagement, particularly of inane, useless tasks. - Little to no training. Training that is provided is largely inadequate and ineffectual. All on-the-job, in-the-moment learning. You will need to re-invent the wheel repeatedly. - ScribeAmerica will change a policy (tuition reimbursement, for example) without contacting any of its employees. - Horrendous pay and little to no benefits. - Management is very unprofessional and, therefore, does not expect professionalism from its employees. - No clear policies about promotions/pay increases. Promotions seem to be made haphazardly. I highly discourage anyone from pursuing a management position of any kind (trainer, chief scribe, project leader).

Pros

None, this company is terrible and no one should work there at all. It is literally the most disorganized company ever. DO NOT WORK THERE.

Cons

So many "promises" of moving up. This company is extremely disorganized and short sighted. I interviewed for a promotion and was put off for months before hearing back after repeatedly trying to contact everyone. No one on the managerial staff is over 25 years old and they are all extremely inexperienced. All the upper management is impossible to get in touch with and extremely inefficient. I didn't even know who my boss was for 6 months.
