Pros

Good experience if you're looking at going to PA, med school, etc. Opportunity to network with physicians for letters of recommendation, references, etc.

Cons

Deceiving about compensation - The job is advertised as paying $10/hr; I only found out halfway through training I would be making $8/hr for the first 90 days. It gets better - at a meeting roughly 3.5 months into my employment, we were informed our raise is not necessarily after 90 days, but at the discretion of management. I will be resigning after 4 months of employment, and am still making $8/hr. I was also led to believe I would be working as a scribe for an ER doctor, as was advertised on the job listing and training workbook. Only on day 1 of floor training (~2 months into employment) was I informed I would instead be working with a hospitalist. This has led to numerous other problems that I won't expand on, as they're not necessarily relevant here. Training was pretty ineffective and drawn out. There was too much focus on medical diagnoses, procedures etc. You will learn this in no time once you start working. Focus should be on using the documentation software and how to do the job well. Management could use work - my project leader was generally unfriendly and unapproachable during training. I did not feel comfortable asking questions and consequently felt unprepared when I began working on my own.

Pros

Overall, this company realizes the perks that scribing offers. Namely, for those looking to go to medical school, it provides real world, hands on experience on the front lines of medical care. Depending on if you are working at academic medical center/affiliate, it can definitely give you some great contacts as well. However, none of this stuff you could not get from shadowing/volunteering. The cons FAR outweigh the pros.

Cons

This company realizes there is a glut of desperate pre-meds out there and exploits this fact to the fullest. Salaries are abysmal. Moreover, promised raises are NOT paid as delivered. Namely, after 3 months of employment (as stipulated in the contract they hurriedly have you sign), you should go up from $8 to $10 an hour. In my case, it took 4.5 months for no apparent reason. Expect to work holidays (often not being paid overtime wages like the rest of the employees) and realize you will be at the bottom of the totem pole. Scheduling is also overall quite erratic.

Pros

Minimal Familiarity with medicine. Good handbook.

Cons

I was hired and fired. They said I worked too slow and expected me expert fast. Supervisor yelled at me for wanting to get a coffee after a couple hours. Wanted pump out work fast which allowed no learning. Inconsistent expectations of my two trainers allowed me to err and get fired. No time look stuff up. Made me feel dumb. Crap pay. No benefits. Nerdy uniforms. Sorry my bad English-on smart phone and being brief.

ScribeAmerica Response

-ScribeAmerica has high standards for its employees. It would be a disservice to both the employee and our clients if we allowed employees to pass through training without meeting minimum competencies including speed, accuracy, and efficiency. -The medical scribe industry exists to help medical providers be more efficient and accurate with medical charting, so our scribes must attain standards that contribute to that goal. ScribeAmerica is steadfast in its position that success as a scribe trainee is directly related to the time, effort, and study the employee undertakes during training. Not every applicant or employee is willing to put in the necessary training effort and study, but those that do so will have a very rewarding and unmatched experience. -ScribeAmerica, like every employer, encourages employees to take breaks at the appropriate times based on the needs of the training session and/or the needs of the client.
