Pros

Overall, this company realizes the perks that scribing offers. Namely, for those looking to go to medical school, it provides real world, hands on experience on the front lines of medical care. Depending on if you are working at academic medical center/affiliate, it can definitely give you some great contacts as well. However, none of this stuff you could not get from shadowing/volunteering. The cons FAR outweigh the pros.

Cons

This company realizes there is a glut of desperate pre-meds out there and exploits this fact to the fullest. Salaries are abysmal. Moreover, promised raises are NOT paid as delivered. Namely, after 3 months of employment (as stipulated in the contract they hurriedly have you sign), you should go up from $8 to $10 an hour. In my case, it took 4.5 months for no apparent reason. Expect to work holidays (often not being paid overtime wages like the rest of the employees) and realize you will be at the bottom of the totem pole. Scheduling is also overall quite erratic.

Pros

The company provides their own training and you can get it without any prior experience. If you are someone's favorite a pro for you is usually a promotion because favoritism is a thing. The doctors that you work with can be some of the best people and they can help you in so many ways in deciding what to do with your future.

Cons

The leadership goes unchecked. Chief scribes and project leaders do what they want with no repercussions. You could try and go above them, but that's joke because they only use diplomatic language to provide excuses. There is a probationary period that seems unnecessary and they don't tell you about it until you have to sign a contract for it. Did I mention it pays 2.00 dollars less than what you are expecting to get paid? And it's so funny that the number one complaint is pay and their HR has a diplomatic response every time that is just a cop out. They play favorites. If you don't suck up to the leadership or if they don't just automatically like you...you will be a minimum wage scribe forever. It's pointless to fight it because again they have excuses for everything. This company likes to pretend that they are so amazing and maybe they are the most used scribe company...but that by no means says that they are the best. They have a long way to go before they are the best. That's like saying because McDonald's is a huge burger chain...they have the best burgers around...HAHA.

Pros

The company cares about the success of their employees. They offer many opportunities for advancement and even careers following your scribe experience. I was a scribe for 3 months before I got a raise, and was promoted to scribe/scribe trainer after only 6 months. If you care about learning the information and about the doctors you work with, you will succeed.

Cons

It can be stressful at times depending on your healthcare facility. I worked in a level 2 trauma, 27 bed emergency department, which means there was a fair amount of busyness. There is always something to do, and a lot of the scribes with natually high anxiety did not do well. I have also worked in a 12 bed, level 3 trauma emergency department which was equally as stressful because it contained half the staff. The stress really just depends on where you are at.
