Growth that hurts

Pros

The people, mostly individual contributors and managers. The Executive staff and upper management will be in the cons section. The people are great, a rag tag group of individuals that make work a little less toil. Benefits are so,so, on par with most F500 organizations. Salary is definitely below market (explained in the cons section). Some positions are remote which is nice. Great work life balance. Most managers really do care about your personal well being and life goals.

Cons

I've been taught that if you don't have anything good to say don't say it. There are cons but these are shared by many corporations and not something the organization should be ashamed of. Acquisition by Dell and consequences. A big issue here was the acquisition by Dell. All accounts from before that time tell of startup mentality. This was before my time. But alas the problem here is that being acquired by a big corp like Dell you run into a lot of red tape. This has significantly stunted the growth from a technology standpoint. Silent layoffs and lack of transparency. There have been massive lay offs in the past year. None of these are communicated out and mostly heard about through word of mouth. This has a lot to do with the technology debt they face with being tied up with obligations to work with certain vendors (Dell mostly). Instead of having the ability to move freely. Like Eastman Kodak back during the digital revolution, the executive staff were afraid of trying new things. Unfortunately it has caught up to them big time.

Pros

Work with nice people. Good office location near city center.

Cons

Poor scope for progression, most decent jobs are for US only staff. I don't trust alot of these reviews after I overheard management saying they had been writing good reviews to counteract the poor ones.

Pros

The salary was good and colleagues friendly and helpful. Dell Secureworks allow flexitime and flexi place working. The company has a commitment to diversity and non discrimination which seems to be reflected in the variety of staff in the Edinburgh office (Though there were no West Indians, Africans, South America etc). Training was provided if there was a short term need for it.

Cons

Chaotic upper management out of touch with problems at lower levels. Excessive bureaucracy, process more important than progress. Unnecessarily complex processes and too many processes - Someone started a process to remove unnecessary processes. No scope for long term development of technical staff and very limited scope for transfer from technical to managerial stream: managers had management jobs sewn up and none were advertised internally. Constant need to market yourself within the company and team. Colleague were friendly but tended to OCD which delayed progress. Agile was badly implemented. Management unable to detect signs of burnout.
