Pros

Base pay is solid, bonuses are generous. Benefits are on par with other companies from personal experience. The Mexico planning team is a pleasure to work with, and are very nice people. Opportunities for growth are limited in San Diego, but are plentiful in Houston, TX.

Cons

I’d be remiss if I didn’t warn others of this trap, so here goes… The main shortfalls of the finance group are the technologies and methodologies utilized for reporting out results. Every process is very manual, and are in desperate need of revamp. Simplifying these processes would likely address the extreme lack of work life balance. Expect nights and weekends often with no warning. Similarly in bad shape is company and departmental culture. It’s a “superman” culture where working long hours is glorified, as opposed to using tools to get it done efficiently. “We’re a family.” The US planning team is extremely clicky, petty, and catty. You will be unable to trust your coworkers. There are many people at IS who have been employed by Sempra their entire/majority of their careers, are very set in their ways, and it is a risk. Many folks in management are merely bosses, worlds away from qualities true leaders should possess. They were promoted into leadership roles without any formal training, and/or personality mismatch. Lastly, PTO policy is laughable.

Pros

One of the only companies to still offer a 401k with match, and a completely free-of-charge Pension plan which vests after 4 years of Full Time Employment.

Cons

Hard to get FTE status. Most employees start as a contractor through another staffing agency. If they like you, you will have the opportunity to get a position directly with the organization, but as a yearly-contract employee. It's a bit strange, as they give you benefits, the 401k, and everything of an FTE, however, they have a yearly option to either renew or not renew your contract, and they tend to let you know later, which has effect on your mental well-being; waiting until the last minute until you know if your job is secure for the the next. However, I wasn't aware of anyone who did not get their yearly contract renewed. This is often due to once you become a Full Time Employee, you are almost completely impervious to be fired.

Pros

Some of the best benefits I've seen or heard in my tenure. While salary may be on lower end of the average range, it is easily made up for with a great pension, high 401k match, annual bonus, etc. Sempra provides great stability during times of economic turmoil. There are so many opportunities within the organization to feel like you are making a societal change (green energy development, smart cars, electricity rates, providing natural gas to developing countries, etc). All organizations have their flaws, but overall, Sempra is an amazing place to work.

Cons

Have to be patient to move up the ladder. Most people start their careers at Sempra and stay forever (a tribute to to how great of a place to work it is) so you have to wait your turn. Can be political environment but so is every large energy/utility company. Depending on the department, long hours could be in store but it is cyclical and there are always opportunities to move around.
